Miscellany

Hey G’s (geeks) just wanted to mention a few things that have popped up lately:
First, Scottie’s Podcast [sorry I used the P word (media cast) whatever] is cool. Really well done with on-site tech and inspired me to pick up Isight and Ilife 06 (waiting for shipping). I’ll comment at Itunes later. I enjoyed the humor, I bet you could be more geeky for the other geeks but, it gave me confidence to try some stuff, so I really liked it. I really enjoyed the link window, I like to link and listen/watch/learn. But, if I am on another page and listening to the podcast I won’t know if you are showing a new link so perhaps you could add a standard (not bothersome) sound effect when you are showing a new link. [Hey G’s, what’s the legal rule with av clips?].
Second, I now have removed my stereo receiver/cd player and listen to all music through airport express, of course I am sacrificing CD quality for MP3 convenience, but, that’s not the problem. I have been watching increasingly more media casts in Itunes which means my music stops playing while I watch/listen. I like background music while I am messing around. Is there an easy solution to this? I love Itunes but, I think I’ve put all my eggs in the same basket. I don’t think ROKU soundbridge will solve this (will it?). I’ll probably need to use the kitchen emac for music but that’s kinda a pain. Any other ideas?

  1. Thanks for the feedback on the podcast. I will definately incorporate more sound que’s into the podcast. I will try to find a quick, not annoying one for links.

  2. Ahhh, let me see if I understand your problem. You want to watch video podcasts or other video media on your computer in iTunes at the same time you are streaming music to your airport express?

  3. A couple of things- Tim Eian will suggest a separate machine to run as your music server. This makes sense, I think. The Mac in your kitchen would surely suffice if you had an external hd hooked up.

With regard to the Roku- this problem, if I understand it correctly, would NOT exist with the Roku. I stream different music to two rokus while playing yet different tunes or watching a movie or whatever with my iMac, which is streaming to the rokus.

My brother had the airport express and a 4.2 ghz cordless phone. Every time the phone rang, the music would drop out. No such problem with Roku either.
I’m sold on Roku and if you want one, my other brother may be selling his. His company makes him run WPA encrypted wireless at home, which roku doesn’t currently support. So, he’s thinking about getting rid of it. Let me know.

  4. I’ve been really happy with the Roku Soundbridge. My server, however, is hooked up to my router via ethernet. I found that having a wireless connection both ways (from the server to the router, and from the router to the Roku Soundbridge) could result in drop outs. My guess is this is due to the fact that my server is an old 500MHz G3 iBook, which is struggeling with the tasks I am throwing at it. Once I went to a hardwired ethernet connection between it (the iBook) and the router, all drop outs stopped. I can stream to multiple Roku Soundbridges at the same, as well. The biggest draw back with the Soundbridge in my opinion is the interface. Sonos‘ Music System is far superior when it comes to the interface, but it is also a lot more expensive (however you don’t need an amp or active speakers, since it comes with a built-in amp). Anyhow – maybe you want to specify your desires a bit more and we can all target our responses better.
