  1. My understanding is that PC2700 is backward compatible with PC2100. The system would most likely run all memory at the PC2100 speed, regardless of the part’s capability.

  2. I’m not 100% sure about the Mac world, but in the traditional Intel side of things you can’t mix speeds between banks. If the board requires memory sticks to be installed in pairs, each pair needs to be the same speed and same capacity. If the system board can handle multiple speeds (like yours seems to), then you can usually install a bank of one speed and another bank of another sped.

As long as the machine is powered off when you’re installing/removing memory (duh!), you won’t hurt anything giving it a go. The worst that will happen is that the machine won’t start or starts but doesn’t show all of the memory.

  3. Mactracker lists the PC2100 chips only for the dual 867MHz machine. For the dual 1+ GHz machine, it lists four PC2700 2.5v unbuffered 8-byte, nonparity 184-pin DDR SDRAM chips! Depending on the processor speed, you should choose the appropriate one.
