Windows Users,
I am running XP Pro in Parallels on my Mac for occasional uses that require it. I’ve been using Parallels “free” Kasperky subscription, which is now coming to an end. For what I use it, I don’t want to pony up $60 per year for something like that. My two questions are 1) Do I really need to run an app like that (I assume the answer is a resounding “yes”) and 2) What is a low cost/no cost alternative to Kaspersky? Please advise. Thanks!

I recommend the free version of AVG:

I have installed it for my parents, my girlfriend, her parents, and for every PC that I have helped with that has crippled and out-of-date Norton or McAfee.
(Anecdotally) it’s lightweight and not a resource hog.
Use AVG Free – http://free.avg.com/
It’s free for personal, non-commercial use which I’m assuming is how you are using this virtual machine.
I use ClamAV on both my Mac and PC. The PC version is available at http://w32.clamav.net/
Experience running this on border mail filters was amazing. Talk to @etherdust about this one.
