VHS to DVD

12.03.07

I’m thinking of converting a bunch of old sentimental VHS tapes to DVD for my parents for Christmas.
Anyone have a suggestion for the in-between converter or have one I could possibly borrow?

I’d be going from VHS to firewire in a Mac.  I just want to convert the video into a new format and keep all the raw footage for maybe a project down the road.

Simple and cost-effective are both at the top of my list.

ISO Mounter

11.21.07

I’m looking for a single executable win32 ISO mounter.  I use LCISOCreator all the time, a single executable ISO creator, and am looking for a complement to that application.
I’m up for any suggestions, even installed items.

Disk Storage

11.19.07

Anyone have any insight into inexpensive but plentiful storage systems?

I’m finally at the point where it’s time to start re-ripping my CD collection into some lossless format. My estimates are that it will take between about 700-750G to hold the whole thing. I need to keep one copy at home and on-line for the home-audio system, and I’d like it to be network attached. Hopefully it’s reasonably priced so I can afford a second one as the project goes forward to have some kind of off-site backup.

I’ve looked at the Drobo, and really like the idea, but it’s USB only and costs $500 for the empty cabinet, then you still have to add drives.

Western Digital’s MyBook World II Edition looks pretty good, with gig-ethernet, compact size, and decent price (about $300 right now from buy.com for the 1T model w/ 2x500G drives). Although that assumes you stripe the included drives to get the 1T, which means a drive failure takes out the entire collection, making a second unit for off-site storage far more important.

LaCie has a similar product (to the WD MyBook) for about $450 via buy.com, but USB 2.0, no network. Same problems with the redundancy part.

There’s also Hammer Storage, who has a 2T unit with network support (2x1T drives) for about $650. Price is higher and the unit is larger, so that makes off-site a bit more difficult.
Anyone else have any thoughts or suggestions?

Looking for a software recommendation

10.22.07

Web-design on OS X, specifically on the x86 platform for a MacBook.

A friend of mine is thinking of buying his girlfriend some web-design software. She’s already a graphic designer, but wants to learn more web-design. Any suggestions for what works well and/or is currently in use by the industry?

Thanks!

Laptop HD wanted

08.06.07

I am looking for a (hopefully free) ultra ATA laptop harddrive that could work in an ancient Apple iBook. 10GB or bigger would be great, 30gigs or more preferred. If you happen to have one of those floating around and it has some life left in it, please let me know.

Wanted! Multiport 100Mbit Switch

11.25.06

I am looking for a used affordable or better yet, free multiport switch. Preferably 16 or 24 ports or something to that extend. More is always better. It should be capable of 10/100 base/T connections and address each port at the proper speed. If you know where to get one or want to part with one yourself, please contact me.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.

Lombard upgrade

04.29.06

I got my hands on a vintage Lombard (Apple PowerBook G3), which is in pretty good shape. I’d like to use it for webstuff around the house, if I can upgrade it to OS X. It currently sports a whopping 64MB of RAM, so I am hoping to find an extra PC66 144pin SO-DIMM with at least 128MB of RAM and a HD with at least 10GB of storage space. Any chance one of you has some spare parts floating around that match these specs?

Looking for an Old School Disk Drive

04.14.06

Hi Geeks,

I’m looking for an old school 5 1/4″ floppy disk drive that will fit into a standard bay. A buddy of mine has a bunch of old data from way back in the day that he’d like to copy to a more modern storage method. I know a lot of you often have some old stuff sitting around. I’m looking for a drive or if you know of a place I can find one cheap. Any ideas?
