December Geek Gather

12.04.09

It’s time for Geek Gather for December. We’re back to Wilde Roast this month. Sadly, the Parlor Room isn’t available this time around (I checked last week), but there’s usually plenty of room even if we can’t steal power for our gear.

See you next week!

KDE 4 and the Dismal State of the Linux Desktop

11.10.09

There has been a lot of push over the past many years to get more Linux onto more desktops. That’s fine, as long as the pushers keep in mind that an Operating System is, fundamentally, a means and not an end. Similarly, desktop environments are neither the journey nor the destination—they are, at most, the steering wheel and the dashboard.

Geek Gather tomorrow night

11.09.09

It’s Geek Gather night at the Chatterbox in Saint Paul. Tomorrow Tuesday, 11/10/2009 at 6.30 pm. Look for those who are looking for you.

Cool Turntables

10.05.09

These sure look nice:

I still have a collection of vinyl.  Somewhere.  One of these would make it worth-while to break out the ol’ Discwasher again.

October Geek Gather back to 2nd Tues/Month

09.18.09

Geek Gatherers,
In an effort to get the dates for the monthly Gather back on track, I propose the next GG be held on 10/13/2009 at Wilde Roast in NE MPLS. 6.30 pm or after. Look for those who are looking for you.

September Geek Gather this Tuesday

09.13.09

It appears that second Tuesday can be virtually any Tuesday of the month—at least when looking at this summer’s Geek Gather schedule. So in this tradition—and in the hope to soon return to the actual second Tuesday of the month, this month’s meeting can be attended at the home of the infamous strawberry lemonade (Chatterbox) in Saint Paul this Tuesday, 9/15 at 6.30PM.

I Like Doing Business with General Nano.

09.11.09

The shop is something like an auto parts store. There’s a long counter, and most of the parts and surly sales assistants are kept behind it. Customers stand on the other side and wait their turns. You would almost expect to see a little machine dispensing numbered tickets, but no one calls your number here. If the shop is crowded, you need to be a little assertive. Stand at the bar and stare at whomever is most likely to be free to help you next.

August Geek Gather

08.20.09

Here we are, August, and time for another Geek Gather. Sorry it’s late this month, but with all the conflicting schedules it’s getting harder to find an agreeable date.

Come join us at Wilde Roast Cafe. The food is good, the desserts are delicious.

We’ll take over the parlor room, if possible, but they haven’t responded to my email yet so who knows. Otherwise, just find the group that doesn’t make any sense and it’s probably us.

WordPress Complete 2.7+ Book

08.07.09

April Hodge Silver, here. I’m new to Geek Gather, having lived in the Twin Cities for just 3 months and attended 2 Gathers so far. And now for some only slightly shameful self-promotion:

wordpress_bookJust last month, my first (and possibly only? Time will tell) book was published by Packt Publishing. It’s called WordPress Complete 2.7+ and replaces an earlier version of the book from 2004. I rewrote this book from the ground up.

I thought the Geek Gather crowd might be interested in knowing about WP Complete, which covers a wide range of topics, from how to install and using the wp-admin all the way to the basics of writing themes and plugins. There also a whole chapter on using WP as a CMS for a regular non-blog website.

If anyone is interested in reading the book and writing a review on your blog or website, or for Amazon.com, let me know and I can get you a free copy.

August Geek Gather

08.06.09

The time has come for another Geek Gather. Since we started trading off, it’s Wilde Roast this month. We have one person that can’t make it, how do other folks sit? Do we want to push it out by a week?

Thoughts anyone?
