There now is a Geek Gather Twitter account setup. This will be used for announcements of events, blog postings, etc. Simply follow http://twitter.com/geekgather and you will receive posts. This will require you have a Twitter account, but come on already, all the cool kids are doing it.

I am looking for suggestions and feedback as to what to post and current thoughts are the following:

  • Event announcements
  • Links to member blog posts
  • Other news pertinent to the GG crowd

If you want to post something to the Geek Gather account, please contact me out-of-band for info.

“Free” Windows XP Antivirus App?

08.12.08

Windows Users,
I am running XP Pro in Parallels on my Mac for occasional uses that require it. I’ve been using Parallels “free” Kasperky subscription, which is now coming to an end. For what I use it, I don’t want to pony up $60 per year for something like that. My two questions are 1) Do I really need to run an app like that (I assume the answer is a resounding “yes”) and 2) What is a low cost/no cost alternative to Kaspersky? Please advise. Thanks!

Hosting Questions

07.14.08

I’m seeking clarity and experience.

Currently, I’m paying Speakeasy to host DNS, a web site, and to provide MTA services for me. I get my mail via IMAP, so they’re providing storage of mail as well. It’s more expensive than I’d like and I don’t get enough space for my mail.

Finding a solution for web and DNS is easy. Yes, you can all send me your Dreamhost referral info now. I’ll randomly select someone. What I can’t seem to get clarity on is the whole MTA thing. Dreamhost used to provide this service (I think), but they recently recommended that customers not use them as their MTA and suggest gmail as an alternative.

I’d like to have my mail hosted somewhere that provides IMAP access and isn’t in my basement and that allows me to use my own domain name. Is anyone doing this with Dreamhost or other? Has anyone worked this out with gmail, yahoo or other?

iPhone 3g has landed

07.11.08

I partook in the madness and waited in line. Four hours to be exact. The wait: boring, the buying experience: perfect. Less than 5 minutes to transfer my number from t-mobile. I skipped activation in the store as it appeared to be rocky. Did it from home later without glitches. First impression: amazing piece of hardware. Used it to write this post.
