VHS to DVD

I’m thinking of converting a bunch of old sentimental VHS tapes to DVD for my parents for Christmas.
Anyone have a suggestion for the in-between converter or have one I could possibly borrow?

I’d be going from VHS to firewire in a Mac.  I just want to convert the video into a new format and keep all the raw footage for maybe a project down the road.

Simple and cost-effective are both at the top of my list.

So who’s gonna get an iPhone?

With the release date of the iPhone nearing—at least according to the rumours sections of our beloved geek news websites— I am wondering who will actually get one?

Personally, I hardly ever use a cell phone and I am not looking to have a steady relationship with “Raising the bar”, aka “We’re not happy ’til you’re not happy” wireless. I am much more interested in an iPhone without the phone—or at least without the GSM component. The thought of using it for my Skype or VOIP connections however is quite interesting. Using its 3G connectivity for mobile internet access (or access for my dated iBook) sound pretty good, too. So what I am describing is probably less the iPhone but a product that could be the iPhone, in my ideal world. At any rate, this means that I won’t be getting one anytime soon.

So my question is, once again, who is getting one, and how do you see yourself using it. “Buler? Buler? Buler?”

Linux LCD Picture Frame

I have an old laptop. It’s a PIII 733Mhz Dell Inspiron 5000, which you may recall weighs about as much as a small Yugo. This laptop is old enough that I don’t use it, but good enough for some use. So I’ve decided to attempt the creation of a Linux based LCD picture frame. I’m not the first to attempt this and this guy has some good guidance.

So far, I’ve managed successful disassembly, and the bits and pieces still boot. The system is currently running Fedora Core 5 off an IBM Travelstar HD.

Considerations for the future are:

1. Should I boot off some solid state media instead, and if so, where should pics be stored?

2. Can I run this PIII without a fan if it’s a sufficiently open case?

3. Do I want to try to remount the trackpad and keyboard, or just go with auto-networking and remote management?

4. Software details: auto-login, scripts to start the pictures, poll the usb port and add pics, FTP access to pics directory

5. Mounting and framing.

I’ll keep the geeks up to date on the project, especially when I need some help.

Attempting ‘all-in-one’ PC Mod–Turning Garbage into Gold!

Hey, folks!  I just grabbed an old all-in-one pc off the scrap heap, and I am going to try to convert it into something actually useful – a touchscreen bar-top jukebox.  Only problem, I want to do it on the cheap!  Can I get some feedback regarding any ‘skinable’ open source setup that I might be able to put on this thing?

Tech specs — It’s got a honking POWERHOUSE under the hood!  Celeron 566 with 512 of PC133 on an ultra modified mATX framework (I think).  It’s a crap heap, but hey, it comes with a 15.4″ LCD screen with a 2.5″ flat bezel frame and a decently sturdy and quiet case.  I may be stripping this down and airbrushing some nice enamel on it, but who knows.  The value price of FREE was well within my budget!

Any sage advice from the GG Open Source crowd would be greatly appreciated!  I would think it would be cool if there was some Media Center like apps out there that could run on this, that shows album art with a customizable GUI.

Any ideas?
